Marathopoli seaside village

Marathopoli is the village closest to the house: five kilometres, just enough time to drive down before it gets dark. It is a real fishing village, with boats pulled up on shore, a short seafront and tavernas that open towards evening and set their tables almost on the water.

Just over three kilometres out to sea lies Proti Island, which closes off the horizon and makes the sunset here different from one on an open coast: the sun sets behind the outline of the island and the water in the channel stays calm. That is why in Marathopoli people dine late and unhurriedly.

It is also the handy place for everyday shopping and for buying fish, when you feel like firing up the barbecue in the garden instead of going out.

Practical tips

  • The seafront tavernas are busiest in the evening: in high season it is best to call ahead.
  • Sunset behind Proti Island is the best time to arrive in the village.
  • It is the most convenient place for groceries and for fish to cook on the barbecue.
