Pylos and Niokastro Fortress

Pylos is the main town in the area: about twenty minutes by car from the house, with its harbour and, above all, the main square shaded by plane trees, with cafés under the arcades and little shops all around. It is where you go when you want to spend a couple of hours in a real town, with no plans.

Above the town stands Niokastro, the Ottoman fortress that commands the entrance to Navarino Bay: walls, bastions and a view that takes in the bay, the island of Sphacteria and the open sea. This is the bay where the naval battle of 1827 was fought, a decisive episode in the Greek War of Independence, and from the ramparts you can follow the geography of the story.

Pylos is ideal for a half-day trip: the fortress in the morning, coffee in the square mid-morning, then back to the sea in the afternoon.

Practical tips

  • Half a day is just right: the fortress and the square, without rushing.
  • Niokastro’s opening hours and tickets vary with the season: check them before heading up.
  • The square of the plane trees is the best place for a break in the shade during the hottest hours.
